Halloween is coming up within a week and you have no costume? What can you do?
Well, thankfully in Taiwan, Halloween is becoming more and more popular each year. The problem is that most of the costumes for kids are getting cooler and cooler, the wigs, hats, and whatever plastic weapon of your choice are the same from year to year. Waakao took a stroll around Taipei and talked to some of our friends in other cities to get a comprehensive guide to finding Halloween costumes (mostly).
(Halloween Party Guide Coming Soon)
Halloween Tip #1: Don't wear an afro. I'm serious. There's no real need to do this to yourself. Yes, we've all done it once or twice, but please for the sake of the rest of us, no afros. This can be said for the $300 pimp outfit with hat and fur coat, also.

Halloween Tip #2: See! I mean it. No afros!

Halloween Tip #3: For ladies. Please, it's funny to dress like a guy occassionally. It might even be semi-hilarious to dress up like your friend who is a guy. But in all honesty, we prefer Halloween night to be sexy. Sexy nurse. Sexy Lady Ga-Ga. Sexy Taxi-Driver. It's a night you can be anything. Be sexy!
Halloween Tip #4: Please don't wear this. It won't be funny.

Halloween Tip #5: If you are going to wear make-up caked on your face, then remember you are in for a long night. It wears off easily and will clog up your pores.
Halloween Tip #6: Go get your costume now. Really. On Thursday, Friday and Saturday, these places will be madhouses and no one will much left. Plus, trying to buy Halloween costumes on Halloween doesn't give you much space to bargain. Which leads to...
Halloween Tip #7: Haggle with people. If you don't, you do a disservice to everyone. But everything will be marked up the closer it gets to Halloween. Also, be a bit discreet. If you pull a person over and try to bargain softly so that the salesperson is not embarassed or other customers can hear, you're much more likely to get a deal.
Halloween Tip #8: More moustaches. This guy has at least three different kinds.

Costumes in Taipei:
There are two main areas to get costumes in Taipei. Ximending MRT Exit 1 comes out to HanJong Street (Jia) by the police station. There are five costume shops within a block there to choose from if you want to rent some. (Note: A lot are already rented out, so go ASAP). For all kinds of crazy things, head to the store that is at 150 HanJong Street upstairs on the second floor of a breakfast shop. It looks like this from the outside:

Here's a look. Trust me, this place is already crazy with people so go today. Or yesterday. But this one will have stuff last minute, too.

The other main place in Taipei city is Chang An West Road, about half a block west of Chen De. Just get to the road and you will see at least seven stores within two blocks of each other. The best one seemed to be Party World, right at the NE corner of Chang An and Tai Yuan Rd. Wigs there were $99 and I saw some of the same ones at other places for $250. Just remember to do some comparison shopping because a lot of the shops have the same things.

Finally, if you are in Tien Mu, next to Lili's is Best Buy. They have a lot of stuff. Expect this to be overpriced because they can.

Other cities:
Tainan
From SuperPhotographer and Hunter S. Thompson look-a-like, Steven Vigar:
Off the Nanmen circle "Jhong jeng Rd. same side as Fire station. There is a seasonal themed store. At Halloween they stock up on a plethora of costumes / fake blood / all the necessities.
Taichung Halloween Party
From promoter and good music lover Beth Cox:
most of the places are fairly scattered around the city... bookstores
and a couple craft stores have seasonal stuff. There isn't a full on
costume/halloween supply spot here in Taichung as far as I know.
I went to check out this place and they don't have tons in the way of props to buy, but they have tons of costumes for rent.
