A case for Sherlock Holmes
The man who stole two diamond rings worth a total of more than NT$10 million from the Taipei 101 shopping mall escaped to South Korea, police said Wednesday.
Two days later, a 40-year-old South Korean man surnamed Kim reported his passport stolen. Two hours before Kim reported his stolen passport to police, a man looking like the suspected thief used his passport to board a flight to Seoul.
According to Kim another South Korean man had accosted him while he was strolling through the Hsimenting shopping area after which Kim noticed his passport had disappeared and then told the local police precinct.
Police noticed that the passenger at the airport bore a striking resemblance to the suspected thief caught on camera at Taipei 101 and in Tokyo during a previous alleged theft.
The theft of the diamond rings occured when a young woman was asked by the thief to serve as interpreter while he selected a ring for his sister. He claimed to be Japanese and spoke poor English, reports said.
While the shop
assistant turned away, the man ran off with two rings with a value
estimated at more than NT$10 million. He reportedly escaped by bicycle,
reports said.
The woman and two shop assistants said they recognized the man who left on the stolen passport as the diamond thief.
Kim left Taiwan a day after reporting the loss of his passport but could also be a suspect because his story sounded rather extraordinary, police said.
